We are starting research on the conditions and needs for training, career guidance, re-profiling, and support for young people that will contribute to the equitable transformation of mining communities. This issue is relevant in connection with the Government's plans to liquidate non-profit state-owned coal enterprises. As soon as this happens, there will be problems with employment, retraining of laid-off workers, and the future of mining communities in general.
We will be working on the project in July-November 2024 together with Pavlohrad City, Pershotravensk City and Petropavlivska Territorial Communities of Dnipropetrovska oblast, with the support of the NGO Center for Environmental Initiatives “Ecoaction” and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
As part of the project, our team will survey the mining communities of the Dnipro region to determine their needs for training young people in mining and other non-mining-related professions. We will also review Ukrainian higher and secondary educational institutions for training in mining specialties by state order and raise awareness among young people in selected mining communities about the unpromising nature of coal mining professions during the war and post-war period.
We will discuss the project results at a roundtable discussion with a wide range of stakeholders, including ministries, agencies, academics, representatives of mining communities, educational institutions, and the public.
The publication was made within the framework of the project “New Energy - Facilitating Dialogue for Sustainable Development of Ukrainian Coal Regions”, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection in cooperation with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.
