On October 2-3, Vadym Sidyachenko, an expert of the NGO "Center for International Cooperation and Project Implementation", took part in the Workshop on Climate Action Policy Development organized by the UNECE in Skopje, North Macedonia.
The workshop was attended by representatives of Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Mongolia, Armenia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Montenegro, Kazakhstan, Georgia, and North Macedonia.
This is a very difficult and important work, given that the UN Economic Commission for Europe invited countries that are not in the mainstream of climate action and do not actively and unequivocally support Ukraine in the war against the Russian aggressor.
Presenting Ukraine's climate actions and plans, Mr. Sidyachenko emphasized the destabilizing and destructive impact of the war on the lives of Ukrainians, on the ecology and biodiversity of Ukraine, on energy infrastructure and agriculture.
At the same time, he drew special attention to the direct and indirect effects of the war on the climate, water environment, biodiversity and ecology of Ukraine.
Despite the doubts and warnings of the organizers, he convinced and made a presentation prepared by an international group of experts, which demonstrated the enormous figures of emissions from burnt cities and forests, from military operations, and from indirect man-made consequences. Taken together, these additional emissions are equivalent to the emissions Belgium produces in a year. Therefore, taking into account the consequences of Russian aggression on the overall climate action should be mandatory and considered at all international platforms!
This thesis, at the suggestion of Mr. Sidyachenko, was included in the final recommendations of the seminar and will be taken into account in the next events of the UN Economic Commission for Europe.
